When lighting a bunch of torches, only 1 is burned at a time.
0 penny torches are impossible to light.
Cheap torches are hard to light and burn out fairly quicky. If you want a better torch, try spending some money on it.

Feel free to paint, write in, describe, etc, but bear in mind when the last torch burns out it will be gone.
Note: torches only shorten while players are near.
