You are looking at many metroid research papers scattered on the floor here

The papers are torn and stained but you can make out some of the writing:
--- most common form, the larval stage, is made up of a thick gelatinous outer membrane. Inside this are several large nuclie, connected by thick branches to the outer membrane.
A metroid has two pairs of mandibles, one for gripping prey, and another, smaller, pair for draining life energy. We have yet to discover how the metroid extracts this--- predators with no natural enemies, and will feed on anything but other metroids.
